Restore Strength and Function with Dental Crowns at Papageorgiou Dental Associates

FC – Restore Strength and Function with Dental Crowns at Papageorgiou Dental Associates

When a tooth becomes damaged or weakened by decay, a fracture, or extensive wear, a dental crown is often the best solution to restore its strength and protect it for the future. Think of a crown as a custom-fitted helmet for your tooth. It covers the entire visible portion above the gumline, providing reinforcement and restoring its original shape and function.

With extensive clinical experience, our dentists, Dr. Christina Papageorgiou and Dr. Paola Buckley, design and place every dental crown with precision, comfort, and durability in mind. We combine advanced restorative techniques with a patient-focused philosophy to ensure you receive results you can rely on.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that completely encases a tooth. While a filling is used to repair a small area of a tooth affected by decay, a crown is necessary when a tooth has lost a significant amount of its structure and needs comprehensive protection. By covering the tooth, a crown distributes the force from biting and chewing evenly, which prevents further fractures and allows you to eat comfortably. This also helps preserve the natural tooth root, which is vital for maintaining a healthy jawbone.

When Is a Dental Crown Recommended?

Dentists recommend dental crowns in several situations:

  • Repairing a Broken Tooth: A crown holds a cracked tooth together to prevent further damage.
  • Supporting a Large Filling: A crown reinforces a tooth with extensive decay or a large filling.
  • Protecting After Root Canal Therapy: A crown prevents brittleness and fractures in a tooth treated with root canal therapy.
  • Restoring Extensive Decay: For cavities too large for a filling, a crown restores the tooth’s shape and function.
  • Anchoring a Dental Bridge: Crowns on adjacent teeth anchor a dental bridge that replaces a missing tooth.
  • Completing a Dental Implant: A crown serves as the functional new tooth in a dental implant.

The Dental Crown Procedure

Getting a dental crown at our Natick office involves two simple visits.

1. Examination and Preparation
In your first visit, we will conduct an examination using digital X-rays to evaluate your tooth and surrounding bone. After numbing the area with a local anesthetic, we will reshape the tooth to create a stable foundation for the crown.

2. Digital Impressions
Next, we’ll use our iTero® digital scanner to take a quick and comfortable 3D impression of your teeth, eliminating the need for messy putty molds.

3. Temporary Crown
A temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth while your permanent crown is made. You can eat normally, but we advise avoiding very hard or sticky foods on that side.

4. Permanent Crown
In your second visit, we will check the fit and appearance of your permanent crown. Once everything is perfect, your dentist will bond it in place, restoring your tooth’s strength and appearance.

Materials We Use for Dental Crowns

We prioritize the use of high-quality, metal-free materials for our crowns to provide results that are both strong and aesthetically pleasing. All-porcelain crowns are an excellent choice because the material has a natural translucency that closely mimics tooth enamel, making the restoration virtually indistinguishable from your other teeth. Porcelain is also highly durable, stain-resistant, and biocompatible, meaning it is safe and well-tolerated by the body.

Advanced Technology for Superior Results

Our practice utilizes advanced technology to ensure every step of your treatment is precise and efficient. From digital and panoramic X-rays to intraoral cameras and the iTero® scanner, these tools allow us to create accurate restorations that fit securely and comfortably.

Our Commitment to Safety and Sterilization

Patient safety is our highest priority at Papageorgiou Dental Associates. We adhere to strict, CDC-approved sterilization protocols and use hospital-grade sanitization systems to ensure every instrument and surface is clean. Our office is also equipped with enhanced air filtration (HEPA) systems to maintain a safe environment for all our patients.
